Electric scooter guide: everything you need to know before buying
Electric scooters have quickly become one of the most popular ways to get around the city. They're fast, eco-friendly, and fun to ride — but before you invest in a premium model, there are a few technical and practical details worth understanding. This guide will help you choose the right one.
Motor and power
The motor determines how fast you accelerate and how well the scooter handles hills and heavier riders. A brushless 800W motor delivers both high top speed and strong climbing ability. Brushless motors are quieter, more energy-efficient, and require less maintenance than traditional brushed motors.
Battery and range
Battery capacity is measured in watt-hours (Wh) and determines how far you can go on a single charge. A 48V 15Ah battery typically delivers 30–40 km of range depending on rider weight, terrain, and ride mode. Always choose a battery with some margin if you commute daily, and don't let it sit fully discharged for extended periods.
Tires and suspension
10-inch pneumatic tires, combined with hydraulic suspension front and rear, absorb shocks from uneven roads and provide a significantly more comfortable ride than small, hard tires. This is especially important on city streets with cobblestones and bike lanes of varying quality.
Brakes and safety
Disc brakes provide short stopping distances and better control in wet conditions. Always wear a helmet, use lights and reflectors, and follow local speed limits and traffic laws. A water-resistant build means the scooter can handle rain without damaging the electronics.
Maintenance
Keep tires at the correct pressure, charge the battery regularly, and clean the scooter from dirt and moisture after off-road riding. With proper care, a quality scooter lasts for years and maintains both range and performance over time.
